HEALTH EFFECTS ACUTE
EFFECTS SWALLOWED: Toxic if
swallowed. Causes nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, burning sensation and
diarrhea. May cause muscular weakness, convulsions, loss of consciousness and
possible death. May cause stiffness and limitation of motion. EYE: May cause
irritation to eyes with redness and pain. SKIN: Toxic in
contact with skin. May cause skin irritation. INHALED: Toxic by
inhalation. Symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing, sore throat and burning
sensation. Inhalation of dust may result in respiratory irritation. CHRONIC
EFFECTS Prolonged
or repeated exposure may cause embrittlement and densification of bones,
increased calcification of ligaments and vertabrae resulting in spinal stiffness.
Enzyme system effects and pulmonary fibrosis have been reported. FIRST AID SWALLOWED: IF
swallowed, and more than 15 minutes from hospital, induce vomiting preferably
using Ipecac syrup APF. Seek immediate medical assistance. EYE:
Immediately irrigate with copious quantities of water for at least 15 minutes.
Eyelids to be held open. Seek medical assistance. SKIN: Remove
contaminated clothing. Wash affected area with large amount of soap and water.
If irritation develops seek immediate medical assistance. INHALED: Remove
victim from exposure. Remove contaminated clothing and loosen remaining
clothing. Allow patient to assume most comfortable position and keep warm. Keep
at rest until fully recovered. If breathing is laboured ensure airways are
clear and administer oxygen. If breathing has stopped apply artificial
respiration at once. Seek immediate medical assistance. ADVICE TO DOCTOR Treat
symptomatically.

local and/or general exhaust ventilation to keep exposure level below the exposure
standard. Avoid generating and inhaling dusts. PERSONAL PROTECTION Avoid
skin and eye contact and inhalation of dust. Wear overalls, safety glasses or
goggles and, chemical resistant gloves and safety boots. Respiratory protection
is required if airborne concentration is high or unknown. Use an approved dust
mask if there is a risk of inhaling dust. Always wash hands before smoking,
eating, drinking or using the toilet. FLAMMABILITY Non
combustible solid.
