EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance:
white to light beige crystalline powder.
Warning! Harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. Causes
eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritation. May cause central nervous system
effects. May cause central nervous system depression. Light sensitive. Air
sensitive. May cause cardiac disturbances. The toxicological properties of this
material have not been fully investigated.
Target Organs: Central nervous system, respiratory system,
cardiovascular system, eyes, skin.
Potential Health Effects
Eye: Causes eye irritation. At high concentrations may cause
lacrimation (tearing) and irritation. May cause chemical conjunctivitis.
Skin: Causes skin irritation. May be absorbed through the skin
in harmful amounts.
Ingestion: May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea,
vomiting and diarrhea. May cause cardiac disturbances. The toxicological properties
of this substance have not been fully investigated. May cause central nervous
system depression. May be harmful if swallowed.
Inhalation: May cause respiratory tract irritation. The
toxicological properties of this substance have not been fully investigated.
May be harmful if inhaled. May cause cardiac damage. Can produce delayed
pulmonary edema. Inhalation at high concentrations may cause CNS depression and
asphixiation.
Chronic: Effects may be delayed.
|
Section 4 - First Aid Measures
|
Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least
15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
Skin: Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of water for at
least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing
before reuse.
Ingestion: Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious
person. Get medical aid. Do NOT induce vomiting. If conscious and alert, rinse
mouth and drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.
Inhalation: Remove from exposure and move to fresh air
immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is
difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid. Do NOT use mouth-to-mouth
resuscitation.
Notes to Physician: Treat symptomatically and supportively.
|
Section 5 - Fire Fighting
Measures
|
General Information: As in any fire, wear a
self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or
equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic
gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Containers may
explode in the heat of a fire. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may
cause pollution.
Extinguishing Media: In case of fire, use water, dry chemical,
chemical foam, or alcohol-resistant foam. Use water spray to cool fire-exposed
containers.
Flash Point: Not available.
Autoignition Temperature: Not available.
Explosion Limits, Lower: Not available.
Upper: Not available.
NFPA Rating: (estimated) Health: 2; Flammability: 0;
Instability: 1
|
Section 6 - Accidental Release
Measures
|
General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment
as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks: Clean up spills immediately, observing
precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Sweep up, then place into a
suitable container for disposal. Provide ventilation. Place under an inert
atmosphere.
|
Section 7 - Handling and Storage
|
Handling: Wash thoroughly after handling. Avoid contact with eyes,
skin, and clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid ingestion and
inhalation. Store protected from light. Handle under an inert atmosphere. Store
protected from air. Wash clothing before reuse.
Storage: Keep refrigerated. (Store below 4°C/39°F.) Store in a
tightly closed container. Poison room locked/refrigerator. Do not expose to
air. Store protected from light. Store under an inert atmosphere.
|
Section 8 - Exposure Controls,
Personal Protection
|
Engineering Controls: Facilities storing or utilizing this
material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use
adequate general or local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations
below the permissible exposure limits.

Section 12 - Ecological
Information
|
Ecotoxicity: No data available. No information available.
Environmental: Terrestrial: No information found in the available
literature however, Epinephrine should be highly mobile in soils, and it may
leach to ground water. However, it is unstable in the presence of light, heat,
air and alkalies so it has the potential to undergo direct photolysis and
various chemical reactions in the soil. Aquatic Fate: None located in the
available literature however, expected to undergo changes similar to those
expected in soil. Atmospheric Fate: Expected to exist almost entirely in the
particulate phase in ambient air. It has an estimated half-life of about three
hours.
Physical: No information available.
Other: No information available.

Section 13 - Disposal
Considerations
|
Chemical waste generators must determine whether a discarded chemical is
classified as a hazardous waste. US EPA guidelines for the classification
determination are listed in 40 CFR Parts 261.3. Additionally, waste generators
must consult state and local hazardous waste regulations to ensure complete and
accurate classification.
RCRA P-Series: CAS# 51-43-4: waste number P042.
